During these days, it’s best to eat soft foods that won’t poke your gums or irritate any part of your mouth. As you continue on, your teeth will adjust and your mouth will feel less tender. Even still, it’s important to know what you can and cannot eat during your time wearing braces. With so much metal in your mouth, you’ll want to make sure that you’re not chewing on any food that could break any brackets or stain your teeth. You’ve just made a huge investment in your overall health — the last thing you want is to ruin that by eating something too hard or crunchy. And trust us, the discomfort you will be in from eating something that broke any part of your braces is not worth it.

Foods That You Shouldn’t Eat With Braces

  • Hard Foods — This is very vague, but anything that is too hard to crunch on can damage your braces. This includes any hard breads that are too chewy, nuts and seeds, and raw vegetables, but especially raw carrots. Since these types of food are hard and tough to chew, you are running the risk of breaking a bracket or popping off a wire.
  • Tough Meats — Dried meats like beef jerky should be avoided at all costs when you’re wearing braces. Trying to chew on these can loosen your braces, break wires, and pop off brackets. It’s best to steer clear.
  • Stick Foods And Candy — Sometimes you can’t help but reach for a piece of candy. But with braces you’re going to have to be careful when tending to your craving. Avoid anything that is sticky or tacky, like Tootsie Rolls, caramel chews, jelly beans, licorice, fudge, and even gum. The stickiness can get stuck on the wires and in between the brackets. These are hard to reach places, so even with a thorough clean, you may not be getting all of the particles out. Thus, you’re running the risk of plaque and bacteria buildup. At the end of the day, it’s just not worth it.
  • Ice — While this is technically not a food, many people choose to consider it one. But this might be one of the worst things you can do for your teeth, with or without braces. Since it’s so hard, you’re running the risk of snapping off part of your braces. Not only that, but chewing on ice can also damage the teeth themselves. To avoid damaging your braces or chipping your tooth, use ice for its intended purpose only — to chill drinks.

Foods That Are Safe For Braces

  • Dairy — any type of soft cheese or yogurt is braces approved!
  • Soft Breads — While we suggest you steer clear of any hard pizza crusts or tough bread rolls, you can by all means enjoy a piece of bread with your sandwich. Pancakes, soft tortillas/quesadillas, and baked goods are also fair game.
  • Easy-To-Chew Meats — Stay away from hard, dried meats, but dig into soft, cooked chicken, sliced lunch meat like turkey, ham, and salami, as well as meatballs.
  • Ice Cream — How horrible would it be to not be allowed ice cream? Luckily, ice cream won’t hurt your braces, so treat yourself to a scoop every now and then. But be sure to give your teeth a thorough brushing afterwards to get rid of any sugar buildup!
