Transitioning from childhood to adulthood is difficult as it is. Add to that braces, wisdom teeth, bad breath and facial appearance, teenagers have a lot to worry about.
The busy lives kids live with school, social activities, jobs and sports along with junk foods make it even easier for kids to face dental issues.
The good news is there are some steps you can take to ensure you child has proper oral health:
- Instill the habit of taking care of their teeth with brushing and flossing twice a day and help them understand the consequences of bad oral hygiene such as stains, bad breath, missing teeth and so on.
- Set an example by taking good care of your teeth yourself. Children learn from watching parents and you can enforce good oral health through your actions.
- Always be prepared and have oral health supplies such as toothbrushes, floss, flavored floss and American Dental Association (ADA) approved toothpaste in the bathroom.
- Stock up on fruits and vegetables and avoid buying junk food to avoid unnecessary sugar and bad eating habits.
- Teach your kids about the dangers and consequences of smoking and how to avoid social pressures to take up the habit.
Even after taking these steps, your kids will likely still face some issues such as braces and getting their wisdom teeth removed. Some of the things that you can help them with and remind them is such situations are:
- Braces are not just about having a pretty smile. Straight teeth are less likely to get chipped, they are easier to clean and lead to healthier gums.
- Wisdom teeth don’t always emerge or have enough room to emerge in the late teen or early 20’s. They might also emerge later in life. Impacted wisdom teeth where there is not enough room can cause infection or damage nearby teeth, so they need to be taken care of properly.
- Brushing your teeth isn’t enough. Bad breath usually comes from bacteria in the tongue. For good oral hygiene, you need to brush your tongue along with your teeth.
- Tobacco not only causes gum disease, bad breath, and tooth discoloration but it also causes several types of cancer. It’s easier to kick the habit earlier in life, or better yet, not start at all.
- Oral piercing may seem trending, but they can have adverse effects on the health of your lips, cheeks, uvula or tongue.
